Concentric flue gas exhaust: optimal exhaust and combustion
A concentric flue system is currently the safest and most efficient way to remove flue gases from a central heating boiler or other closed combustion equipment. At RioVent, we use concentric flue systems for both individual homes and collective systems, including in Amsterdam and surrounding municipalities.
Thanks to the clever pipe-in-pipe design, not only is carbon monoxide safely removed, but fresh air is also drawn in from outside. This increases safety, improves the efficiency of your system, and complies with current laws and regulations.

What is a concentric flue?
A concentric flue is a double-walled flue system that combines two functions into a single system. The inner pipe safely discharges the boiler's combustion gases to the outside air. The outer pipe provides the fresh air supply necessary for efficient and stable combustion.
This pipe-in-pipe construction provides additional safety. Should the inner pipe wear out or become damaged over time, flue gases cannot enter the home directly. This makes a concentric flue significantly safer than older systems with separate pipes.
Concentric flue gas exhausts are used in HR central heating boilers, closed gas fireplaces and stoves and are now the standard for new installations.
How does a double-walled flue gas exhaust work?
A concentric flue consists of one pipe with a second pipe inside it. The inner pipe removes the hot flue gases produced during combustion in the boiler. Because these flue gases are hot, the inner pipe also heats up.
The outer pipe draws in cold outside air. This air flows past the warm inner pipe, preheating it before it reaches the boiler. This process contributes to more efficient combustion and improved boiler efficiency.
Older flue systems often used two separate, parallel pipes: one for flue gas exhaust and one for air intake. A concentric system combines these functions in a single, safe, and compact duct.

Very happy with the work they did in our apartment. They completely renovated our bathroom and also took care of walls, plastering, painting, tiles, radiators, and ventilation. Everything was done with great attention to detail and finished faster than expected. The prices were fair and clear. The team was friendly, professional, and very expat friendly, which made communication easy. We are really pleased with the final result and would definitely recommend them.
I received quick and very friendly help from Sam, who explained to me step by step how everything works.
Why choose a concentric flue gas exhaust?
A concentric flue offers several significant advantages in terms of safety, reliability, and energy efficiency. The closed design significantly reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
If the inner pipe is damaged, flue gases will enter the outer pipe. This contaminates the air supply, which the boiler immediately detects. The boiler then automatically shuts down or malfunctions, preventing a dangerous situation.
In addition, preheating the supplied air ensures more stable and efficient combustion, which is beneficial for the service life of the system.
Concentric flue gas exhaust during renovation or replacement
When replacing a central heating boiler or renovating a flue, a concentric system is often the best and safest choice. A careful approach is essential, especially in apartment complexes and older buildings in urban areas like Amsterdam.
RioVent assesses each situation to determine whether an existing flue can be renovated or whether complete replacement is necessary. In some cases, a concentric flue can be installed without any demolition work, minimizing disruption to residents.
Our specialists guide you through the entire process: from inspection and advice to installation and delivery.
Safety and professional concentric system installation
Installing or adjusting a concentric flue must always be carried out by certified professionals. Incorrect installation can lead to leaks, malfunctions, or dangerous situations involving carbon monoxide.
At RioVent we ensure that every concentric flue gas exhaust:
- is mounted airtight
- is correctly confirmed
- complies with applicable standards and guidelines
In addition, we always recommend installing a carbon monoxide detector as an additional safety measure.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about concentric flue gas exhaust
A concentric flue gas exhaust combines flue gas exhaust and air supply in one double-walled pipe, while traditional systems often work with two separate pipes.
For new central heating boilers, a concentric flue gas exhaust is now the standard and often necessary to comply with safety regulations.
In many cases, yes. This depends on the situation, the type of building, and the existing ductwork. RioVent is happy to advise you on this.
Yes, concentric flue gas exhausts are very suitable for both individual and collective installations in apartment complexes.
In the event of wear or leakage, the boiler will malfunction, immediately preventing dangerous flue gases from entering the home.
Regular inspection is important, especially for older installations or when replacing the boiler.
